چکیده

The unslotted Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) with backoff is a fully distributed, asynchronous Media Access Control (MAC) protocol for multiple-access Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) ring networks with simplicity and robustness comparable to those of Ethernet [1,2]. In this paper we present the results of performance evaluation of four scheduling algorithms — Random Select (RS), Destination Priority Queueing (DPQ), Longest Queue First (LQF), and Shortest Packet First (SPF) — designed for the unslotted CSMA/CA with backoff MAC protocol to address the issues of fairness and bandwidth efficiency. Through extensive network-level simulations for a multiple-access WDM ring with 10 nodes and 10 wavelengths on a 100 km ring, we have verified that under uniform traffic condition, the LQF with optical buffer size of 13 and 78 octets shows the best performance in terms of fairness, guaranteeing full fairness (fairness index≈1) for arrival rates up to 9.5 Gbps/node, while for throughput and packet delay, the DPQ with the maximum optical buffer size of 1538 octets gives the best results. We have also identified that the optical buffer size greatly affects the performance of nonrandom scheduling algorithms.

Unslotted optical CSMA/CA MAC protocol with fairness control in metro WDM ring networks

Optical Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) is a Media Access Control (MAC) protocol proposed for future metro Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) ring networks with a fixed receiver and a tunable transmitter at access nodes [1], [2]. In this paper, we focus on the unslotted version of the optical CSMA/CA MAC which is a fullydistributed and asynchronous protocol....

Performance Evaluation of Transmission Algorithms for CSMA/ID WDM Ring Networks

As data traffic increase rapidly, IP over WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) transport will replace conventional SONET transport in current metropolitan area networks. Such networks will require new MAC protocols to efficiently share network bandwidth among multiple network nodes. This research project describes and evaluates a novel Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Idle Detection (CSMA/I...

Novel MAC protocol with idle detection for all-optical WDM ring networks

A novel media access control (MAC) protocol named carrier sense multiple access with idle detection (CSMA/ID) is proposed to handle variable-length packets over an all-optical ring network. To evaluate optimal utilization of channel bandwidth, we study packet scheduling based on three transmitting queue discipline (TQD) architectures and four idle space allocation (ISA) algorithms with regard t...

Letter to the Editor Evaluation of Implant Communication with Polarisation and Unslotted CSMA/CA Protocol inWireless Body Area Networks

In [1], authors show that the implant’s effective radiated power (ERP) and receive signal strength indication (RSSI) are affected by the depth inside a human body. Neither the polarisation of the implant nor the effect(s) of the implant’s distance (from the base station) and the power settings (at the base station) on the RSSI is considered. With regards to the MAC part, the authors of [1] disc...
